Your quote made me immediately think of Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen when he has a similar conversation with Elizabeth. He comes to realise that his pride is dictating the type of man that he is rather than him being maybe who he wants to be and your quote to me, is a similar parallel.
